Homeopathy - What can it achieve?

Postby Tommy » Tue Jan 26, 2010 12:49 pm

"My introduction to Homeopathy was when I read the book, “Impossible cure, The Promise of Homeopathy”, by Amy Lansky. It was the wonderful story of an autistic boy who had made a full recovery with the use of Homeopathy. The book also gives excellent background information and a good understanding of Homeopathy to the lay reader."

This is a quote from Michael Farrelly ( see blog 26th Jan 2010) - what is your experience/view on Homeopathy?

This really worries me.
Homoeopathy has been debunked repeatedly by the sciences.
Water does not have a "memory", nor can one molecule of any substance per billions of molecules have any therapeutic effect. Homoeopathy is very expensive water.
I have no issue with what people chose to spend their money on, and and comforted by the fact that homoeopathy will not inflict any actual physical harm on the body.
What does make me angry is the promise of a cure.
It will not "cure" autism, no more than reflexology, holding therapy or being exorcised by shaman in the Himalayas while on a horse-riding holiday.
Autism can be very effectively treated with nothing more exciting than patience, education and ST/OT.
I'm far enough down the line with autism to know snake-oil when I see it. I feel it's grossly unfair on vulnerable, heart-broken parents in the early days of diagnosis...parents who will clutch at any straw to "rescue" their child. All it does is delay the grieving process.

Tommy,

This website may be of interest to you. It gives some information on the different types of interventions that are out there.

When my daughter was diagnosed with autism, I was overwhelmed with a strong desire to make everything better. Unfortunately, there are some therapists and alternative practitioners out there that promise all sorts of improvements and cures, many of which are completely unrealistic. I found that many therapists recommend that you buy lots of different aids and appliances and you can easily end up with a room full of equipment that your child won't use.

I tend to do as much research as I can on things before I commit to them now. The other thing is that people can have different outcomes from the same intervention. For example: My daughter is on a gluten and casein free diet since she was 2 and a half, it has been very successful for us. Our daughter started talking within three weeks of going on the diet, she had her first proper bowel movements (prior to the diet she always had running nappies) her hyperactivity reduced and her constant climbing stopped. The flip side is I have a number of friends who tried the diet and found no significant change in their child. However, all reported that their child no longer had runny nappies. My husband and I believe that the GFCF diet made a huge difference to our daughter but we would be slow to recommend it to others as it is expensive and it requires huge commitment and it doesn't work for everyone.

Hi,

According to me Homeopathy is nice technique. Each person’s state of optimum health can vary, and you may never have experienced your own optimum. For some people this can take years to achieve, but for others it may happen very quickly.

The science of homeopathy works on the principal of 'like cures like' i.e. diseases are treated by giving substances that are similar to the substances present in the body and are responsible for the illness. Its really works.
